Blockchain Technology: A New Possibility for Financial Inclusion in Bangladesh
Blockchain technology has opened a new horizon for financial inclusion and transparency in Bangladesh. A large portion of the country still remains outside banking services. The use of blockchain in remittances, land registration, education certificate verification, and social safety net distribution can change that picture.
The cost of sending remittances in the global market is still significant. Stellar or Ripple-based blockchain solutions can reduce this cost. If Bangladesh Bank launches an approved sandbox, banks and fintech companies can quickly prove how cost-effective and fast cross-border transactions can be. If remittance flows increase, it will have a positive impact on the rural economy.
Land registration is a long-standing complex problem in Bangladesh. Litigation over ownership is common. If every deed is stored immutably on blockchain, forgery and double selling will stop. If the Ministry of Land starts a pilot project, investor confidence will increase.
Blockchain can revolutionize education certificate verification. To reduce the problem of fake certificates, universities can issue digital certificates. Students will easily get jobs and opportunities for higher education abroad.
Blockchain is effective in eliminating corruption in social safety net distribution. Each allowance will go directly to the beneficiary's digital wallet. The influence of middlemen will decrease. Government expenditure will decrease, and accountability will increase.
However, the challenges are not few. First, digital infrastructure and electricity supply are limited in rural areas. Second, digital literacy is low. Third, the regulatory framework is not yet clear. The central bank is cautious about the risks of digital assets. Fourth, strict monitoring is needed to prevent money laundering in cross-border transactions.
There are ways to solve this. A blockchain sandbox can be launched through public-private partnership. Universities and fintech institutions can research together. Digital literacy programs will include rural populations. Legal reforms must give validity to smart contracts.
If expatriate workers' remittances come through blockchain, the national economy will be strengthened. Investment in the country will increase, and the startup ecosystem will develop. If skills are developed, the youth will be able to compete in the global market.
Blockchain is not magic; it is a tool. With the right policies, infrastructure, and coordination among stakeholders, Bangladesh can achieve significant progress in financial inclusion and good governance.
